Sahi Jatra Masks

Sahi Jatra is performed in Puri, Orissa, during the month of Chaitra (April) on the day of Ramnavami. The very essence of Puri is the so-called 'sahi' (wide lanes). The most attractive feature in Sahi Jatra is the grand procession. This procession moves along lanes crowded with spectators and through many crosssings, which are turned into performing arenas by acrobats, tumblers, dancers, 'nagas,' and 'medhas.' While the Naga figures are symbolic of valour and use makeup to allow for maximum movement, the Medhas are oversized masks built onto elaborate framed structures that fill the breadth of the sahis and represent various gods, goddessses, and demons including Ganesh, Durga, Narasimha, Rama, Ravana, Parasuram, Hanuman, Sugrib, and Angad. The picture given is posed from a demonstration performance of Sahi Jatra, since a representative mask was borrowed for the 1996-1997 exhibit and owing to its size was not kept in the permanent collection.
